Pope Leo XIV Backs Celibacy & Calls for Strong Action on Abuse
Pope Reinforces Celibacy and Calls for Action Against Abuse
Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the importance of priestly celibacy and urged bishops worldwide to take decisive action to combat sexual abuse within the Church. During a gathering at St. Peter’s Basilica with approximately 400 bishops and cardinals from 38 countries, he emphasized that bishops must foster unity, act with integrity, and address abuse cases firmly.
The Pope highlighted that bishops should lead lives of simplicity and proximity to their communities, setting an example for priests and laypeople alike. He stressed that bishops must live detached from wealth and favoritism, embodying the church’s values of holiness and chastity.
On the issue of abuse, Leo insisted that church leaders must act decisively to handle cases involving minors, respecting current laws and ensuring transparency. This follows his recent public remarks condemning various types of abuse and advocating for a culture of prevention within the church.
Leo’s comments align with Pope Francis’ stance, who reaffirmed clerical celibacy as church discipline, though not dogma, and declined requests for married priests in the Amazon. Leo, who previously served as a missionary in Peru, continues to emphasize that the priesthood’s celibate tradition remains essential to the church’s identity.
Through his remarks, the Pope called for renewed commitment to integrity and accountability in the Catholic hierarchy to prevent ongoing abuses and restore trust.
