New Legislation to Accelerate Immigration Enforcement

Officials announced that ICE will significantly boost its efforts to arrest and deport illegal immigrants once President Trump signs the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” recently approved by the Senate. The comprehensive bill spans nearly 900 pages and aims to expand the agency’s capacity by allowing the hiring of 10,000 additional officers and doubling detention facilities.

Funding allocated through the bill will include a $10,000 annual bonus for immigration agents. Currently, ICE faces challenges with detention capacities, as its arrest targets—previously set at 1,800 per day—have strained the system, making it increasingly difficult to accommodate those detained.

The push for greater enforcement has led to the opening of new detention centers, including the recently launched “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida’s Everglades, which can house up to 5,000 detainees. This facility, constructed amid significant political attention, was visited by President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Congress provided funding for about 41,500 detention beds at a cost of around $3.4 billion for fiscal year 2024, though ICE’s current staffing level stands at 20,000 employees. As arrests surge, ICE has been forced to use more resources than initially budgeted to manage the influx.

Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin stated that the new bill would “turbocharge” the agency’s deportation operations, while DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized its role in enhancing staffing and safety for agents amid a reported 700% increase in assaults on personnel. She highlighted the importance of increased manpower to facilitate deportations and ensure safety during operations.

Next steps include final approval from the House before the bill is sent to President Trump for signing, potentially before the Fourth of July.
