Chelsea Sign Joao Pedro for £60M, Taking Summer Spend Past £200M & Linking to Club World Cup Quarters
Joao Pedro Joins Chelsea in £60 Million Deal
London-based Chelsea have officially signed Brazilian forward Joao Pedro from Brighton for a fee believed to be around £60 million. The 23-year-old player flew from Brazil to the United States on Sunday evening to meet his new teammates and undergo medical testing, ahead of completing his transfer.
Chelsea announced the signing with a video showing Pedro juggling on a beach set to Brazilian jazz music, greeting fans with the message: “Welcome to Chelsea, Joao Pedro.”
Pedro is now eligible to play in Chelsea’s upcoming Club World Cup quarter-final against Brazilian side Palmeiras, having agreed to an eight-year contract. He expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “Everyone knows this is a storied club with a rich history. When you’re at Chelsea, the goal is always to win.”
Previously one of Brighton’s standout performers, Pedro scored 30 goals and assisted ten times in 70 appearances after transferring from Watford in 2023. His impressive displays attracted interest from Chelsea and other clubs. Alongside compatriots Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez, and Marc Cucurella, Pedro joins a growing number of players who made the move from Brighton to Chelsea recently.
Pedro can now be part of Chelsea’s squad for the Club World Cup, joining Liam Delap, Mamadou Sarr, and Dario Essugo, who were already available for the group stages. However, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is ineligible due to his recent appearance for Borussia Dortmund in the same competition.
The player relayed that he had a conversation with Chelsea teammate Andrey Santos on Instagram, who provided a positive recommendation. He also mentioned seeking advice from Brazilian legend David Luiz about his career development, which he found helpful.
Early Years and Challenges
Pedro’s football journey began at Fluminense, where he debuted in 36 matches before moving to Watford. His early years were marked by physical struggles, as he was initially very thin and lacked strength, leading to limited playing time.
His perseverance paid off as he gained confidence and recognition at Brighton, where he impressed with his talent, ultimately earning a move to Chelsea. His mother, Flavia, was a steadfast supporter during his developmental years, providing encouragement through challenging times.
