NYC Mom, 36, S:ho:t Dead in BBQ Fight Dares Coward to Step Forward
Brooklyn Woman Fatally Shot After Argument at Barbecue
A woman was shot and killed during a dispute at a barbecue near the Barclays Center. Her family described the perpetrator as a “coward” who was provoked by a seemingly trivial argument and dared him to surrender himself.
Tamika Powell, 36, was struck in the head after an exchange with her attacker Wednesday night. Her mother, Norma Campbell, recounted that Tamika had arrived at the gathering and engaged in a brief argument with someone around 10 to 15 minutes later.
Following the argument, Tamika left the scene, and her attacker reportedly went into his apartment to change into a mask before leaving in her direction. Moments later, gunfire erupted, and witnesses heard a single shot. They found Tamika lying in the street, wounded.
Police confirmed that the shooter fled the scene. Norma Campbell received a frantic call from her youngest daughter and rushed to the corner of Carlton Avenue and Pacific Avenue, where she found her daughter’s lifeless body covered in a white sheet.
Tamika recently moved back into her mother’s home in Prospect Heights, where she was known as a spirited community member. She worked at a FedEx warehouse in Connecticut and leaves behind two daughters aged 12 and 13.
Her mother expressed her disbelief and grief, emphasizing how beloved her daughter was in the neighborhood. She condemned the killer, wishing him to “rot in prison and die a slow and painful death,” and called on him to come forward if he truly was responsible for the act.
Campbell tearfully addressed her daughter’s murderer, calling him a coward and urging him to face justice.
