Robbie Savage Shocks Football World by Replacing Sacked Coach—Turns Down Big-Name Offers!
Robbie Savage appointed as manager at Forest Green, replacing sacked head coach
Robbie Savage has been named the new manager of Forest Green, taking over from Steve Cotterill. The appointment follows his recent resignation as head coach of Macclesfield FC, a club he co-owns and previously served as director.
Savage, a 50-year-old former Manchester United youth player with 356 Premier League appearances for clubs including Leicester City, Birmingham City, and Derby County, is considered a close friend of Forest Green’s director of football, Mark Bowen. His decision to leave Macclesfield came after they secured promotion to the National League North last season, achieving 109 points and finishing 26 points ahead of second place.
In his new role, Savage expressed enthusiasm for implementing an attacking style of play, emphasizing the importance of winning games above all. “I want a fast, exciting style, but the primary goal is to secure victories,” he stated.
His predecessor was dismissed after Forest Green narrowly missed out on promotion through the National League play-offs. Despite finishing third, they were eliminated by Southend on penalties, missing the chance to advance to Wembley.
Reports indicate that Savage declined offers to manage teams higher up the football pyramid, opting instead for the challenge at Forest Green. His recent contract extension with Macclesfield was a testament to his commitment, highlighted by his role in the club’s successful season and his deep connection to the team and community. “What we’ve achieved together — three promotions in four years, a semi-final run in the FA Trophy, and a record-breaking season — has been incredible,” he said. “I’m dedicated to this project and the journey ahead, and I can’t leave the dressing room until this chapter is complete.”
Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney reportedly turned down an offer to manage Macclesfield, reaffirming Savage’s firm commitment to his new role.
Chairman Dale Vince remains focused on returning the team to the Football League following their relegation from League Two last year.
