Why Liverpool Spent £85M on Darwin Nunez Instead of Alexander Isak — The Shocking Truth Revealed!

Decision Behind Liverpool’s Choice of Darwin Nunez Over Alexander Isak

Liverpool’s former head of research has disclosed why the club opted to sign Darwin Nunez in 2022 instead of Alexander Isak. Nunez was acquired from Benfica in a record-breaking transfer, with an initial fee of £64 million that could rise to £85 million with add-ons. Meanwhile, Newcastle spent £63 million to bring Isak in the same summer from Real Sociedad.

While Isak has thrived at Newcastle, scoring 62 goals in 109 appearances, Nunez has faced challenges, scoring 40 goals in 143 matches for Liverpool. Despite injury setbacks, Isak’s performance has been impressive, especially in the Premier League where he netted 54 times in 86 games.

The decision-making process was influenced by Liverpool’s then-coach Jurgen Klopp, who reportedly favored Nunez over Isak. According to Ian Graham, a former club researcher, Klopp’s growing influence over transfers played a key role. Graham recounted how Klopp was previously persuaded to sign Mo Salah, which proved highly successful.

Graham explained that Klopp preferred Nunez because he was one of the top young center-forwards in Europe, despite Erling Haaland’s presence at Manchester City. He emphasized that the club still signed excellent players in Nunez, considered one of Europe’s best young strikers.

Klopp, who supported Nunez during his time at Liverpool, stepped down as manager in 2024 after overseeing 47 appearances last season, with only eight starts in the Premier League. Currently, Nunez is linked with several clubs, including Napoli, which is considered the leading candidate to sign him on a reduced fee.

Liverpool aims to strengthen their striking options this summer if financially feasible. While Isak remains a preferred target, his high valuation—initially over £100 million—is a significant obstacle for the club.
