Heroic Stepdad Sustains Severe Burns While Saving Stepchildren from Cleveland Apartment Explosion
A brave stepfather sustained extensive burns after rushing back into a burning apartment to rescue his two stepchildren following a devastating explosion in Cleveland.
Cordale Sheffield, 30, was visibly injured, with skin peeling from his body and singed hair, as he emerged from the ruins. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at the Garden Valley complex, where Sheffield lived with his girlfriend and her children.
Despite being knocked out of the building by the blast, Sheffield defied the flames to save the children, ages 10 and 11, who were still inside. His sister, Cierra Alqawi, recounted that Sheffield attempted to get both children to jump from the building, but only one succeeded. Without hesitation, Sheffield re-entered the flames in an effort to reach the other.
Sheffield’s sister, who first saw the footage circulating on social media, described his condition as dire. He suffered burns covering 92% of his body and has undergone multiple surgeries, including the removal of all skin from his body. He is expected to remain hospitalized for at least six months.
The explosion, which occurred around 4:30 p.m., caused chaos and destruction across the neighborhood. Footage shows a woman dropping her baby from a second-story window to waiting bystanders who used a ladder to reach her. Firefighters responded quickly, rescuing those trapped and battling the flames, which damaged numerous units and displaced many residents.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, and authorities continue to assess the damage and respond to the affected community.
