Make Bobby Moore a Knight! Bowel Cancer Survivors Rally to Honor England Legend — Campaign Gains Momentum

Campaign Urges Posthumous Knighthood for Football Legend Bobby Moore

Supporters of the Bobby Moore Fund, a charity dedicated to cancer research, are calling for the late England football icon to be honored with a posthumous knighthood. The fund, which bears Moore’s name, has raised over £31 million for Cancer Research UK, aiding in awareness, patient support, and treatment advancements.

Bobby Moore, who captained England to victory in the 1966 World Cup and played for West Ham and Fulham, died from cancer in 1993 at the age of 51. Although he received an OBE, he was never knighted during his lifetime. Advocates argue he deserves the honor posthumously for his contributions both on and off the pitch.

Family and supporters recall Moore’s respected character and the impact he had beyond football. One supporter, Marcus Hitchens, whose father played alongside Moore, emphasized the respect Moore commanded and expressed concern that he was overlooked after retiring from the sport.

Campaign supporting a knighthood for Bobby Moore

A campaign advocating for a knighthood for Bobby Moore has gained widespread backing

The campaign has garnered signatures from football legends, including Sir Geoff Hurst, Bryan Robson, and Frank Lampard, highlighting Moore’s enduring legacy. Supporters stress that, unlike knighthoods which expire with the recipient, recognizing Moore now would appropriately honor his life and achievements.

Moore’s name has become synonymous with integrity and leadership, and his legacy continues through the fund named after him, which has also helped raise awareness about bowel cancer, a disease he fought personally. The fund has provided a platform for survivors like Matt Black, who praised Moore’s influence in shifting perceptions around bowel health.

“It’s important to give him the recognition he was denied in life,” Black said. “Bobby turned tragedy into a positive force, using sport to raise awareness of bowel cancer, especially among men who might not otherwise seek help.”

To support the campaign, petitions are available online, and more information can be found through the Bobby Moore Fund’s official page.
