Colorado Funeral Home Owner Who Hid 190 Decaying Bodies Gets 20-Year Prison Sentence!

Funeral Home Owner Sentenced to 20 Years for Storing and Misusing Bodies

A funeral director in Colorado received the maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison after being convicted of multiple crimes, including storing nearly 190 bodies in poor conditions and providing families with fake ashes. The owner, Jon Hallford of Return to Nature Funeral Home, admitted to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and is also accused of abusing corpses and fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 relief funds.

Investigators discovered the bodies in 2023 inside a dilapidated building in Penrose, stacked haphazardly amidst a bug-infested environment. Many families learned that their loved ones were neither cremated nor properly memorialized, with some bodies being buried incorrectly. This revelation caused significant emotional distress; some family members reported nightmares and feelings of guilt.

During the sentencing, Hallford expressed remorse, stating he initially intended to make a positive impact but lost control. Many affected families reacted with grief, hugging each other after the judge’s decision. The court also highlighted the emotional devastation caused by Hallford’s actions, with the judge emphasizing the case’s unusual severity.

Prosecutors argued for a 15-year sentence, noting the extensive scale of the fraud and abuse. Hallford and his wife, Carie, are accused of misappropriating COVID relief funds, including purchasing luxury vehicles, cryptocurrency, and designer items, which they used to fund their lifestyle while neglecting their business obligations to families.

One emotional testimony came from Derrick Johnson, who traveled 3,000 miles to speak about his mother, whose body was mishandled. Johnson described the horror of discovering her body among the stacked corpses, saying he often wonders if she was undressed or improperly treated during her time inside the morgue.

Hallford’s attorney pushed for a reduced sentence of 10 years, acknowledging his client’s remorse without offering excuses. The sentencing in the state case is scheduled for August, and his wife, Carie Hallford, faces upcoming federal and state trials, with her next hearing set for September.
