64-Year-Old Wo:me:n Sparks Chaos by Sitting Calmly in Lawn Chair During Police Standoff on Texas Highway!
Woman Causes Hours-Long Highway Standoff in Texas
A woman armed with a firearm sparked a tense, hours-long police standoff after she deliberately stopped traffic by planting herself in the middle of a busy Texas highway.
The incident occurred Thursday around 1:30 p.m. on Interstate 45 in Spring, when the 64-year-old woman intentionally collided her vehicle with an 18-wheeler before exiting her car and sitting in the roadway with a .38 revolver in hand.
She positioned herself in the southbound lane, remaining seated in a folding chair and seemingly calm as officers attempted to negotiate with her. Authorities described her mental state as unstable, with a history of psychosis, which complicated efforts to approach her safely.
During the standoff, sheriff’s deputies secured the scene, shutting down both directions of the highway and backing up traffic for miles. A crisis negotiator was called in, and the woman’s daughter arrived on scene, playing a key role in de-escalating the situation.
“We allowed her to speak to her daughter to let her know she was safe,” said Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “That seemed to help her realize she was going to be okay and she would see her daughter again.”
The woman was intermittently responsive and emotionally distressed. After approximately five hours, she surrendered, embracing the negotiator before being taken into custody. She was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
The driver of the truck involved in the initial crash was unharmed. Authorities noted that no force was used to apprehend her, and she is expected to face some citations for her actions.
“Someone’s mother and grandmother will potentially return home after she receives the help she needs,” Gonzalez said. “It’s a relief that no injuries occurred, and we achieved a peaceful resolution.”
