The former owner of Rangers, Sir David Murray, who came close to purchasing Manchester United, has heavily criticized Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s management style at Old Trafford. Murray described Ratcliffe’s decision-making as “shoot your head,” highlighting concerns over austerity measures and financial strategies implemented at the club.

Murray recounted that United’s current operations have become “dysfunctional,” citing the decision to pay high wages, such as Casemiro’s £370,000 weekly salary, while simultaneously cutting costs elsewhere—like shutting the staff canteen and replacing free lunches with fruit. He questioned the logic of such policies, emphasizing the club’s financial disparity and managerial choices.

Murray also pointed out that Ratcliffe’s ownership of a refinery in Scotland is financially unviable, urging caution to avoid damaging the club’s core—its people and its history. He warned that recklessly stripping the club’s “heart and soul” could undermine its longstanding success, similar to what happened to Rangers after his controversial sale of the club in 2011.

Sharing his own experiences, Murray revealed he once planned a merger between United and Rangers, proposing joint marketing efforts and cost-saving measures in his autobiography Mettle. However, the Scottish Football Association’s ruling against cross-border ownership prevented further steps, and the merger never materialized.

Despite criticisms, Murray expressed regret over the impact of recent upheavals on club employees, acknowledging the importance of the staff’s dedication to Manchester United’s legacy. His insights highlight the delicate balance between financial discipline and maintaining the club’s spirit.
