An Unexpected Find in a Footballer’s Garden

Dealing with footballers can be routine, but sometimes shocking discoveries arise. One such occasion involved uncovering spent bullets in the garden of a high-profile player.

As a player liaison officer for a major Premier League club, I would sometimes visit players’ homes to check on their well-being and ensure their living spaces were cared for.

Many of the foreign players, particularly young and single, resided in rented accommodations arranged by the club. Sometimes, boredom or loneliness could lead to concerning situations.

That day was particularly startling. The scattered shells were from an Uzi 9mm submachine gun, though they were blanks. Who or what could he have been targeting? I suspected friends might have been involved.

During the visit, I also found pink, fluffy handcuffs and a packet of condoms near his indoor swimming pool. I chose not to pry further and left shortly after.

My role was to support players’ overall well-being—helping them find balance and happiness, which could translate to better performance for the club. I often emphasized that I was there to serve their needs, not their wants, although the lines sometimes blurred.

Among the challenges were gambling issues. I once discovered roulette chips in a player’s car, despite rules against betting on football. Some players resorted to old-school methods like sending a friend with cash to place bets, which carried risks.

Players also indulged in habits like smoking shisha—occasionally causing damage, such as burned carpets—or sneaking off to rendezvous during travel, often taking unauthorized guests onboard team trips.

Monitoring vulnerabilities was part of my work. Some players faced loneliness, others were exploited by dishonest acquaintances, and some had lax personal security—factors that could undermine their focus on football.

Effective communication and trust were vital, as was managing relationships with agents, wives, and girlfriends, who could influence players’ lives—sometimes complicating their careers.

Modern footballers are mostly normal men with insecurities and dreams, just like anyone else. While some display maturity and generosity, others can behave immaturely, leading to incidents like arguments or unprofessional conduct.

Overall, the environment has improved regarding language and inclusivity, but room for growth remains. Despite some frustrations, I valued my role in helping players navigate the complexities of their lives behind the scenes.
