Chaos erupted on Coney Island Beach when at least 16 teenagers were detained following a large fight at the busy shoreline.
The altercation began around 6:30 p.m. on the sands near the historic Riegelmann Boardwalk at West 15th Street and quickly spilled into nearby streets. The incident occurred during a period of extreme heat in the city, drawing hundreds of teens to the popular beach destination.
Footage shows several teens in handcuffs being escorted away by NYPD officers amidst a crowd of onlookers. It remains unclear what triggered the melee, and no injuries were immediately reported.
Authorities responded swiftly, with over three dozen officers forming a human barrier to restore order. Chases unfolded through the crowd, and a paramedic was hit during the chaos as police pursued suspects.
In one instance, officers apprehended a teen by force and pinned him against benches and bushes. Another video captures an officer tackling a young man underneath the boardwalk after a brief chase.
Disturbances extended nearly a mile to Brighton Beach, where officers continued their efforts to disperse the group. In one scene, a teen was seen resisting arrest and was tased by police, prompting a resident to question the use of force.
Police have not commented on the use of a Taser. All arrests are pending formal charges, and the investigation is ongoing.
