Ensuring National Security in the Face of Iran’s Threats

The recent escalation between Iran and Israel highlights that border security is a critical aspect of national security. Even though efforts under President Trump successfully curtailed Iran’s nuclear ambitions and led to a cease-fire, the threat posed by ballistic missiles and terrorist networks remains significant.

While Iran’s missile capabilities don’t reach the U.S., its terrorist affiliates continue to pose dangers domestically. Over the past decades, Iran-backed agents have targeted individuals such as Salman Rushdie, who has faced threats to his life in both Europe and the U.S. In 2022, a suspected Iranian sympathizer severely injured Rushdie in an attack.

There have also been attempts to target then-President Trump. Court documents reveal that Asif Merchant, detained in Texas, expressed admiration for Iran and tried to hire individuals to assassinate Trump, only to be thwarted by FBI agents. Similarly, Farhad Shakeri, an Afghan national linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, faces charges of plotting to kill Trump and an Iranian critic in the U.S.

These plotted attacks underscore the importance of border enforcement. Federal officials warn that porous borders, especially under policies of the current administration, have allowed thousands of Iranian nationals to enter illegally. Many were released into the country, elevating concerns about potential sleeper cells activated in retaliation for military strikes against Iran’s nuclear sites.

Historically, weak border security has facilitated terrorist acts, including those responsible for 9/11. Enhancing immigration screening and border controls is essential to prevent radicalization and infiltration by hostile foreign agents.

Iran’s use of proxies like Hezbollah to threaten Israel and harm Americans in the Middle East underscores the ongoing danger. Maintaining strict border protections is vital by preventing Iran from developing or deploying long-range terror weapons on U.S. soil.

While geographic advantages have historically protected the U.S., globalization and transcontinental terrorism have expanded the battlefield to our borders. Vigilance and firm border policies are crucial in defending against future threats and ensuring the safety of the nation.
