Iran Fires Missiles at US Military Base in Qatar in Retaliation
Iran launched a missile attack targeting a US military installation in Qatar early Monday, retaliating for recent US air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The offensive was characterized by Iran as a response to the US actions over the weekend.
The attack involved approximately 19 missiles directed at the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military facility in the Middle East, located about 40 miles southwest of Doha. Qatar’s air defenses intercepted 13 of the projectiles before they could hit their targets, with video footage showing missiles detonating mid-flight over the Persian Gulf. A missile did strike the base, but there were no reported casualties.
Iranian officials claimed the strike was a “powerful missile” operation called “Blessings of Victory,” and noted that the attack was a measured response designed to avoid escalation. Despite this, Iran asserted it desires peace and is open to diplomatic talks after punishing the US for its aggressions.
In contrast, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned against harassment and reaffirmed Iran’s refusal to submit to external pressure, emphasizing that they have not harmed anyone and will not tolerate harassment.
The US confirmed the attack was carried out using short- and medium-range ballistic missiles believed to have originated from Iran. Following the strike, US officials reported no casualties and indicated they were monitoring the situation closely. The White House acknowledged awareness of potential threats and was convening its national security team.
Qatari authorities praised their air defenses for successfully intercepting the missiles, stating they were given advance warning by Iran, which allowed US aircraft to be moved away from the base. The incident caused the diversion of several commercial flights in the region due to airspace restrictions.
While Iran claims the attack was a restrained response, it signals ongoing tensions in the region. Historically, Doha has maintained relatively close relations with Iran and has acted as a mediator during regional conflicts. Despite recent hostilities, Iran expressed a desire to maintain friendly relations and clarified that the strikes targeted non-urban areas.
As the US monitors the aftermath, the incident underscores the fragile balance of power and the potential for further escalation in the region.
