Mark Clattenburg Reveals His All-Time Favorite ‘Nasty’ Real Madrid Defender!
Legendary Defenders Discussed by Referee Mark Clattenburg
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has revealed his favourite all-time defender on the latest episode of the podcast Whistleblowers. Known for his insights and candid opinions, Clattenburg chose the Portuguese centre-back Pepe, praising his skill and professionalism despite a reputation for being combative on the pitch.
During his career, Pepe appeared in 229 matches for Real Madrid, securing 15 major trophies, and was notable for his aggressive style and dedication. Clattenburg mentioned watching Pepe at Euro 2024, where, at age 41, he performed remarkably well. “He was an incredible professional—every ball, he was there,” Clattenburg said, highlighting Pepe’s impressive consistency and ability to read the game.
Clattenburg also recounted officiating Pepe during significant matches, including Real Madrid’s 2016 Champions League victory. He recalled awarding a controversial penalty against Pepe in that final—a decision that sparked debate at the time.
When asked who he would pair with Pepe in an ideal defensive partnership, Clattenburg suggested Vincent Kompany, citing the Belgian’s ball-playing ability and positive attitude as complementary traits. “I prefer a shot-stopper and a ball-player combo,” he explained.
In contrast, co-host Ian Ladyman looked further back in football history, naming Liverpool legend Alan Hansen as his top defender. Ladyman praised Hansen’s impeccable defensive skills and numerous titles, describing him as virtually unbeatable at the back.
Further, Ladyman selected Nemanja Vidić as the ideal partner for a modern stylish defender, describing Vidić as a formidable presence with exceptional aerial ability and tackling strength. Both hosts emphasized qualities such as bravery, athleticism, leadership, and physicality when discussing the greatest defenders in football history.
