Shocking Secrets from ‘The Pilot’ You Won’t Believe Mother Jones Revealed!

Community Pilots Help Overcome Barriers to Abortion Access

Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which allowed states to restrict or ban abortion, 17 states have implemented strict limits. The consequences include rising maternal and infant mortality rates, but the effects go beyond statistics, creating numerous small hurdles that impede access to healthcare. In response, some individuals have taken proactive steps to support those seeking abortions and gender-affirming care.

One pilot, driven by the desire to help, began volunteering with an abortion access organization, exploring ways to use aviation skills to facilitate transportation for those in need. After collaborating with other pilots and securing initial legal funding, they launched a website to coordinate aid. Following the leaker of the Dobbs decision in 2022, the effort gained rapid momentum, attracting volunteers, donors, and partners.

By September of the same year, the pilot transitioned to full-time support, helping transport over 2,500 people across more than 1.4 million miles. For pilots, maintaining flying proficiency requires regular trips; using flights as a means to provide healthcare access gives a meaningful purpose to their flying activities. The movement saw an increase in volunteer sign-ups after elections, with around 150-200 pilots actively participating.

The aviation community, often perceived as conservative and predominantly male, shows diversity within this initiative—more women and people of color are involved than typical pilot groups. Some volunteers are motivated by personal experiences with abortion, while others oppose government interference in personal health decisions.

Travel arrangements prioritize safety and privacy; passengers communicate only via first names and phone numbers, often using aliases. This anonymity helps protect those who lack identification, face domestic abuse, or seek to keep their pregnancies confidential. Support includes assisting individuals who cannot access traditional transportation or need specialized obstetric care, especially as access diminishes in many regions.

Remarkably, most individuals flying with this program have never been on an airplane before. On one of the initial flights, a young girl exclaimed, “That was freaking awesome!” reflecting how these journeys not only provide vital healthcare access but also create memorable, empowering experiences.
