NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Once Advocated to Abolish Elite High School Admissions Test

Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for NYC mayor and a Queens assemblyman, previously supported eliminating the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) because he believed it was a racist barrier. Although he has limited public comment on this issue during his campaign, Mamdani has expressed support for further studies into the test’s potential bias.

In February 2022, Mamdani, who previously tutored for the specialized testing process, highlighted his stance on reforming admissions policies. He pointed out the segregation he has observed within NYC public schools and emphasized his support for integrating schools and fully funding the education system, including the abolition of the SHSAT.

The SHSAT is currently the sole criterion for entry into New York City’s eight specialized high schools, including Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, and Brooklyn Tech. Mamdani’s remarks reflect a broader debate about the fairness of this exam, which critics say perpetuates inequality and privilege.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, a leading contender for the Democratic nomination, has long supported keeping the exam, with his spokesperson affirming Cuomo’s stance. Despite attempts by previous administrations, notably Mayor Bill de Blasio, to change the law, efforts to reform the admissions process have failed.

Additionally, Mamdani’s campaign spokesperson stated that he currently has no plans to oppose the existing testing system but declined to clarify any recent shifts in his position regarding the abolition of the SHSAT.
