You Won’t Believe What B-2 Bombers Had on Their 37-Hour Fordow Raid!

Detailed Look at the Long-Range Mission of the B-2 Stealth Bombers

The advanced American B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, which recently targeted Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility, are equipped with onboard amenities such as toilets, microwaves, and coolers to ensure crew comfort during extended flights. The mission involved a 37-hour nonstop journey from Missouri to Iran and back, making it the longest sortie since 2001.

These aircraft, originally designed to deliver nuclear payloads against the Soviet Union, took off from Whiteman Air Force Base near Kansas City. They flew in near silence, with crews taking turns resting amidst highly coordinated support from escort jets and support aircraft, all synchronized precisely with minimal communication.

The operation began at 6:40 p.m. ET, with a lead B-2 dropping two GBU-57 bunker busters into the Fordow complex, responsible for numerous aim points. The mission saw the deployment of a total of 14 bunker-buster bombs, marking the first use of the massive 15-ton GBU-57s in combat.

Throughout the operation, a fleet of fighter jets and support aircraft escorted the B-2s into Iranian airspace, executing a complex, tightly timed maneuver. After reaching the target area, the bombers hit their designated sites systematically.

With a wingspan of 172 feet, the B-2 relies heavily on automation and has enough space—including a dedicated restroom and room for crew rest—to endure lengthy flights. Each aircraft costs over $2 billion, with only 19 in the fleet, following a crash in 2008.

This historic mission not only demonstrated the B-2’s capabilities but also involved precise coordination with escort aircraft, culminating in a high-impact strike that targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities.
