US Conducts Major Airstrikes on Iranian Nuclear Facilities

The United States launched a significant military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, aiming to disable Iran’s nuclear weapons capacity. Termed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” this surprise night-time strike involved the deployment of over a dozen 15-ton GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOP) bunker-buster bombs, marking the first combat use of these powerful weapons.

Defense officials confirmed that all three targeted sites sustained extensive damage, with initial assessments indicating severe destruction. The goal was to signal U.S. resolve and deter future nuclear developments. Military leaders emphasized that the operation’s focus was solely on degrading Iran’s nuclear capabilities, asserting it was not intended for regime change.

From the White House, officials clarified that the mission was precise and targeted, with no evidence of Iranian resistance or engagement during the attack, suggesting they retained surprise. The operation also involved long-range B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, completing their longest mission since 2001, with careful planning to avoid prolonged conflict.

U.S. officials have communicated with Iran through various channels, offering opportunities to return to negotiations, while reaffirming that military responses remain available if necessary. President Trump, addressing the situation, hinted at the possibility of regime change in Iran if the current government fails to make Iran “great again,” reflecting a posture of firmness.

Reactions from Iran included nationwide protests, with demonstrators chanting “Death to America” and displaying images of Iran’s Supreme Leader. Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament moved to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, threatening to cut off a significant portion of global oil shipments, risking economic fallout.

Russia and China condemned the strikes, warning of a “dangerous escalation” and warning that Iran could now acquire nuclear weapons from other nations. The Department of Homeland Security has issued a terrorism alert, cautioning of potential retaliatory actions against U.S. targets.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth highlighted that while the operation was overwhelming, the U.S. intends to avoid a drawn-out conflict. He stressed that the mission was aimed solely at neutralizing Iran’s nuclear threat, not regime change, and that diplomatic channels remain open.
