NYPD Surgeon and Touro Professor Accused of Sexually Assaulting Woman Seeking Job Advice

Prominent Doctor Accused of Rape and Threatening with Firearm in Manhattan

A doctor with ties to law enforcement is facing serious charges after allegedly assaulting a woman in his Manhattan apartment. Prosecutors claim Dr. Maurizio Miglietta, 56, who serves as an honorary police surgeon for the NYPD, forced himself on a visitor while displaying a loaded gun, threatening her to watch out for it.

The incident occurred on June 5 in his Financial District residence, where the victim—who viewed Miglietta as a mentor—had gone for career advice. Instead of a professional discussion, Miglietta reportedly made an unwanted romantic advance, kissing her without consent. When she tried to push him away, he lifted his shirt to reveal a firearm in his holster, warning her that it was loaded and asking if it was.

Prosecutors detailed that Miglietta then forced her to perform oral sex and attempted to continue the assault, which stopped only after the victim stated she had a work engagement. Miglietta was arrested the following day at his home, where he was found with two guns. He claims to be a “special agent” and a US Marshal, although he was not registered to carry firearms in New York City. He also holds multiple licenses for firearms in New Jersey.

In court, Miglietta pleaded not guilty to charges including rape, attempted rape, sexual abuse, and weapons possession. Bail was set at $1 million cash or a $3 million partially-secured bond, with the court ordering him to surrender all firearms, his passport, and to wear an electronic monitor. Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing, and potential victims can contact the Special Victims Division.

Miglietta, a former recipient of Crain’s NY Business “40 under 40” list, has a notable career including roles as a physician advisor for the Secret Service and chief of acute care surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He also runs the Institute for Hernia Repair in Paramus and maintains dual-board certification in general surgery and surgical critical care. He is due back in court on January 21.
