Tiny Island Nation Secures Historic World Cup Spot—Big Trouble for Andre Onana and Co!
Cape Verde Qualifies for Their First FIFA World Cup
Cape Verde has become the second smallest nation to ever secure a spot in the FIFA World Cup after defeating Eswatini 3-0, ensuring their debut appearance in next year’s tournament.
The team entered the match knowing that victory would guarantee their qualification. Goals from Dailon Livramento and Willy Semedo, scored around halftime, put Cape Verde in the lead. A late goal by defender Stopira in stoppage time sealed the win and sparked celebrations at their national stadium.

Having been a Portuguese colony before gaining independence in 1975, Cape Verde became a FIFA member in 1982. Despite multiple previous attempts, their best performances included reaching the African Cup of Nations four times and now qualifying for their first World Cup.
Under coach Bubista, the Blue Sharks finished at the top of their qualifying group with seven wins, two draws, and just one loss. Roberto Lopes, a defender for Shamrock Rovers, expressed overwhelming joy: “We dreamed of playing on the highest stage, and now we’ve achieved it. It’s a feeling of pride and relief to be the first Cape Verdean team to reach the World Cup and represent our nation.”
Although Cape Verde missed a chance to qualify last week after a 3-3 draw with Libya, they ultimately finished ahead of Cameroon, the African team with the most World Cup appearances. Their qualification was aided by FIFA’s expansion of the tournament to 48 teams, allowing for nine direct slots for African nations. Among the debutants for next year’s event are Uzbekistan and Jordan. Cameroon now faces the playoff route to join the tournament.
