82-Year-Old Woman Shoots Husband at South Carolina Nursing Home
82-Year-Old Woman Accused of Fatally Shooting Her Husband in South Carolina Nursing Home
An elderly woman has been arrested following an apparent premeditated shooting that resulted in her husband’s death inside a South Carolina nursing facility. Harriet Kay Recker, 82, allegedly shot her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, at the Preston Health Center shortly after his admission for medical care.
According to authorities, the incident occurred one day after Dennis was admitted. A neighbor, who was escorting Harriet to the facility, left her alone in a room to retrieve an extra chair. During that time, the neighbor heard a loud noise and hurried back to find Harriet holding a revolver and her husband with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite emergency efforts, Dennis died at the scene, and his final words reportedly confirmed the shooting: “She shot me.”
Investigators found a cryptic note in Harriet’s purse, matching one discovered in her home, which expressed despair over their circumstances, suggesting the act was planned. The note read, “To you all, this has just been too much for me, I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends.”
Harriet was taken into custody the same day and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. She remains jailed without bail as her case advances through the legal system. A judge found sufficient evidence to proceed to a grand jury.
In court, local residents described Harriet as a kind and loving woman. A pest control worker familiar with her noted she was “always loving” and “the nicest person in Sun City,” reflecting the community’s surprise at the charges against her.
