NYC Columbus Day Parade Canceled Amid NY State of Emergency

Cancellation of NYC’s 81st Columbus Day Parade Due to Severe Weather

New York City’s traditional Columbus Day Parade, scheduled for Monday, has been called off because of dangerous weather conditions caused by a nor’easter. The parade, organized by the Columbus Citizens Foundation, was canceled late Sunday night, less than 24 hours before its planned start. The foundation confirmed that the event would not be rescheduled this year.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency across all five boroughs as well as Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties, citing heavy rain, high winds, and flooding. The emergency order facilitates access to funds for storm-related damages. The entire neighboring state of New Jersey also declared a similar emergency.

The storm’s peak is expected during the next two high tides, overnight at midnight and again at noon Monday, with surges of up to 3 feet and waves reaching 15 feet along coastlines. Winds could gust up to 60 mph, creating hazardous conditions for any outdoor events, including the parade.

Though canceled this year, officials expressed optimism about returning for the 82nd parade in 2026, promising celebrations then. The storm’s ongoing impact is part of a broader weather system expected to last through Monday evening, affecting the region’s transportation and outdoor activities.
