Scotland 2-1 Belarus: Scots Keep World Cup Dream Alive, Steve Clarke Still Disappointed
Scotland Secures Playoff Spot Despite Unconvincing Performance
Manager Steve Clarke acknowledged that Scotland’s display in their 2-1 victory over Belarus was far from their best, even though the result clinched a World Cup playoff place. Goals from Che Adams and Scott McTominay secured the vital points, moving the team significantly closer to qualifying for next summer’s finals in North America.
With Denmark later defeating Greece 3-1, Scotland now faces a decisive winner-takes-all match if they fail to top Group C and qualify automatically. Despite the win, their performance was shaky, prompting some dismissive boos from the home crowd at Hampden Park.
Clarke, who set a new record by managing his 72nd Scottish match, was candid afterward. “Performances alone don’t guarantee qualification,” he stated. “If you’d told me at the start of this camp that we’d earn six points, I’d have been pleased.”

He expressed disappointment with the team’s lack of control and execution: “Tonight, we were too open and didn’t manage the game well with or without the ball. It was our poorest performance against a lower-ranked team, which is perplexing.”
“While I have great faith in the team and trust them completely, tonight’s display fell below expectations. We didn’t turn up as we should have, but we’re still in a strong position,” Clarke added, confident about the upcoming crucial matches against Greece and Denmark.
The match saw Belarus having a goal disallowed by VAR and equalizing in stoppage time, intensifying the tense atmosphere. Clarke acknowledged nerves might have played a role, despite the team’s extensive experience. “The anxiety stemmed from our poor start; if we had better control, the crowd’s energy would have been different,” he explained.
He commented on the boos at full-time: “Fans are entitled to their opinions, especially when performances disappoint. But I share their dissatisfaction.” Scottish captain Andy Robertson admitted their performance didn’t meet expectations: “It doesn’t feel like a win right now, and the frustration is clear. We gave away too many chances and need to improve before our final games.”
