Al Pacino’s Big Regret Revealed After Diane Keaton’s Passing

Al Pacino Regrets Not Marrying Diane Keaton

Al Pacino has expressed lingering regret over not tying the knot with Diane Keaton, his on-and-off romantic partner for nearly 20 years. Keaton, who recently passed away at age 79, famously played Pacino’s romantic interest in the “Godfather” trilogy. Their relationship began in 1974, but ended in 1990 after Keaton gave an ultimatum that Pacino declined to meet by proposing marriage.

A close friend of Pacino revealed that the actor now wishes he had married Keaton, describing how Pacino often said, “If it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do-over.” The friend added that Pacino considered Keaton the love of his life, referring to her as “an incredible woman,” and expressed that the pair never spoke again despite living near each other in Beverly Hills.

Keaton reflected on their relationship in a 2017 interview, saying she thought Pacino might propose someday, but ultimately appreciated that they never married. She explained, “We’re very eccentric, and he needed someone to take care of him, while I needed someone to care for me. Our breakup wasn’t my decision—it was just right that we parted ways.” She also admitted it was for the best that they never married, considering their differences.

Pacino publicly acknowledged Keaton’s significance in his life during a 2017 tribute, saying, “You’re an artist, Di. I love you, forever.” The actress viewed Pacino fondly but recognized their relationship’s incompatibility, stating, “It would have been a nightmare for him.” She also expressed relief that they never married, believing it would have been difficult for both.

Despite their separation, Keaton and Pacino maintained mutual respect and affection. Keaton previously described her initial crush on Pacino during filming in 1972 as “madly in love,” citing his charm and complexity. Both have chosen paths of non-marriage but are proud parents of children from other relationships. Pacino welcomed a son, Roman, in 2003 with Noor Alfallah, whom he later dated.
