Andrea Radrizzani on Leeds United, Regrets, and Bielsa’s ‘Spygate’ Scandal

Andrea Radrizzani Plans Return to Elland Road as Leeds United Reclaims Top Flight

It has been over two years since Andrea Radrizzani last visited Leeds’ Elland Road. During Leeds’ relegation to the Championship in 2023, Radrizzani was in Italy finalizing a deal to acquire Sampdoria, while the club was under the process of selling his majority stake to 49ers Enterprises.

Reflecting on that difficult period, Radrizzani expressed regret for not attending the crucial match, which coincided with his deal in Milan. He admits he made several mistakes during his final year at Leeds, including delaying a managerial change before the 2022 World Cup, which he now views as a missed opportunity.

Initially, Radrizzani gained popularity after acquiring Leeds in 2017 from Massimo Cellino. His tenure saw on-field success, including promotion to the Premier League in 2020. However, with the club’s 2023 relegation, its value plummeted, prompting him to sell for £170 million shortly after fans voiced dissatisfaction with his ownership.

He recalls feeling overwhelmed and unable to carry the immense responsibility, but remains emotionally attached to Leeds, with his son growing up a passionate supporter. Now returning to Elland Road for the first time since selling, Radrizzani looks forward to watching the team’s upcoming match against West Ham, scheduled for October 24.

“I miss the atmosphere,” he says. “It’s time to come back and enjoy. I stay in contact with the club’s chairman, and I plan to visit soon.”

His initial involvement with Leeds was inspired by a suggestion from Kenny Dalglish, who called the club a sleeping giant. Radrizzani admits he underestimated its global reach, noting how fans from around the world connected with the club during his ownership.

Radrizzani’s time at Leeds featured notable figures like Marcelo Bielsa, whose innovative approach and ‘Spygate’ incident brought international attention. Despite the highs, Radrizzani regrets firing Bielsa in 2022, feeling it was a tough but ultimately wrong decision, driven by a desire to preserve Premier League status.

He also reflects on managerial changes, including hiring Jesse Marsch and the controversial tenure of Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola, which he laments came too late. Recent struggles with relegation have tested the club’s resilience, but Radrizzani praises current manager Daniel Farke, highlighting the team’s disciplined and organized play as promising signs.

Looking ahead, Radrizzani hopes to see the club continue its revival, improve facilities, and further establish Leeds as a major force. Despite setbacks, he still feels connected to the club and believes Leeds’ journey back to the top is only just beginning.
