NYC Braces for Nor’easter: Heavy Rain & Flooding Ahead

Upcoming Nor’easter Threatens New York City with Heavy Rain and Coastal Flooding

An intense nor’easter is forecasted to hit New York City this weekend, bringing heavy rainfall and powerful winds up to 60 mph. Forecasters predict the city could receive between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain, starting Sunday night and continuing into Monday, with higher totals possible in some areas.

The storm poses a significant flood risk, especially for low-lying neighborhoods and coastal regions. The National Weather Service warns that persistent onshore winds, high surf, and elevated tides could cause major coastal flooding along the East Coast.

Residents in low-lying zones and along the coastline, including parts of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx, are advised to prepare for potential flooding. Forecasters expect rain will gradually increase Saturday, peaking after 8 a.m. on Sunday, with winds reaching 23 mph, gusting up to 41 mph. In southern Brooklyn and Queens, wind speeds could hit 60 mph Sunday afternoon and evening, likely causing fallen trees and power outages.

Coastal Flood Watches are in effect, with waves reaching 12–15 feet and tides potentially 2–4 feet above normal, risking beach erosion and dune breaches. New Jersey has already declared a state of emergency to prepare for these conditions.

The NYC Emergency Management urges residents to take proactive steps, such as packing emergency supplies, moving vehicles to higher ground, and clearing local drainage systems. Real-time updates can be monitored via the NYC FloodNet website. Officials stress the importance of early preparation and staying informed as the storm approaches.
