Manchester United Flop Criticized for 8-Month Goal Drought

Ex-Manchester United Player Criticized for Goal Drought After Eight Months Without Scoring

Anthony Martial, the former Manchester United striker now playing in Mexico, has faced heavy criticism following an extended goal drought. Since his move to Monterrey in the summer of 2024, Martial has not scored a single goal or assisted in his first five appearances, with some local media deeming his performances “unacceptable.”

Martial, 29, left Old Trafford after nine seasons and a successful stint at Monaco, joining Greek club AEK Athens on a lucrative free transfer. His time at Athens was marred by injuries, limiting him to only 23 appearances and nine goals. The club cut their losses after just a year, leading him to transfer to Monterrey, where he expressed confidence due to prior familiarity with other players in the league.

However, his adaptation to Mexican football has been disappointing. During his latest game against Tijuana, Martial missed a clear chance to score, drawing sharp criticism. Journalists highlighted a missed header from just a few meters out, which could have secured a victory for Monterrey. Described as “an unacceptable error,” the mistake sparked comparisons to his previous performances.

Further context reveals that Martial almost joined Pumas UNAM in Mexico City but the deal fell through at the last minute, with reports indicating he and his camp withdrew. Some critics allege the decision might be linked to financial disagreements or negotiations. Former United teammate Aaron Ramsey, who also played in Mexico, was initially linked to Pumas in a similar transfer.

Despite his prolific past—commanding a £36million move from Monaco to Manchester United in 2015 and netting 90 goals in 317 appearances—Martial’s recent form has been underwhelming. His time in Greece and now Mexico hasn’t matched the early promise he showed at Old Trafford, leading to ongoing critique of his recent performances.
