Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink Reflects on His Journey from Crime to Stardom

Currently competing on Strictly Come Dancing, former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink shares his remarkable transformation from a troubled youth to a celebrated athlete and TV personality. His early life was marred by involvement in crime, including gang activity and theft, which nearly derailed his future.

The 53-year-old, known for his time at clubs like Leeds, Chelsea, and Middlesbrough, openly discusses his past, revealing that he was once in a gang and often carried a knife. Growing up in an impoverished neighborhood in Zaandam, Netherlands, after moving from Suriname, Hasselbaink recalls witnessing violence and despair, with instances of people attempting suicide around him.

His difficult circumstances were compounded by a family struggling to survive, with his mother raising six children alone. His troubled youth peaked during a night at a concert when he and friends stole tickets, leading to his arrest and a three-month stint in a youth detention center. During that period, he recognized the need for change after sharing a dormitory with a volatile roommate.

Football became a turning point for Hasselbaink, initially as a goalkeeper, then as a winger and striker. With coaching from his family—including his uncle, a Suriname national team player—he pursued a career across Europe, from AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands to Portugal’s Boavista, before rising to prominence at Leeds and then Chelsea.

Despite his sporting success, Hasselbaink admits to past gambling issues, including losing significant sums at casinos, though he emphasizes he never bet more than £1,000. His life outside football also included controversy, notably an undercover sting in 2016 where he was falsely accused of seeking bribes, a claim he strongly denies.

Today, Hasselbaink balances his role as a football coach, TV pundit, and entertainer, currently participating in Strictly Come Dancing. Inspired by his family—including his wife and four daughters—he has embraced this new chapter, finding joy and purpose on the dance floor.
