NYPD Officer Injured in NYC Struggle with Suspect
Sergeant Hospitalized After Bronx Domestic Shooting Incident
An NYPD sergeant sustained a serious head injury during a confrontation with an armed suspect involved in a domestic disturbance in the Bronx on Thursday evening. The officer was injured amidst a violent struggle after responding to reports of a robbery at Van Nest Avenue.
The incident began when a father contacted police, alleging his adult son had robbed his mother and brother at gunpoint. Officers tracked the suspect to a building near the intersection of Paulding Avenue and East Gun Hill Road, where a barricade was established.
According to authorities, the 18-year-old suspect initially denied involvement when approached. As officers attempted to hold the door shut while awaiting backup, the suspect fired three shots inside the apartment. He then tried to flee the scene, prompting a physical altercation with officers in the hallway.
During the fight, the suspect engaged in further gunfire and was shot twice—once in the lower back and once in the right arm—by an officer. The wounded officer was transported to Jacobi Medical Center and is currently in stable condition. The suspect was also taken to the same hospital and remains in critical condition.
The suspect has a significant criminal record involving violence, police said. Authorities recovered a firearm, a bag, and evidence of ballistic damage inside the residence, including spent shell casings and a broken window.
Witnesses reported hearing loud gunfire during the scuffle. “The whole floor shook with two gunshots,’’ recalled one resident. Police confirmed the officer fell back during the encounter, hitting his head on the way down.
Officials emphasized the dangers officers face in domestic situations, often unknown and unpredictable. “Our officers entered a very hazardous environment and acted quickly to arrest the suspect,” said police officials.
While the identities of the officer and suspect remain undisclosed, authorities expressed relief that the officer is expected to recover fully. The investigation is ongoing.
