Shearer on Liverpool’s new signing Arne Slot & Why Arsenal Must Win the Premier League

Alan Shearer on Liverpool’s New Signings and Arsenal’s Title Chase

Liverpool has faced a tough spell recently, losing their last three matches and exposing weaknesses in their squad. Despite sitting just a point behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, the club’s hefty transfer spendings—close to half a billion pounds—have raised expectations.

New signings such as Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong have struggled to make an impact. Shearer pointed out that Arne Slot, Liverpool’s manager, seems hesitant to fully trust some of his new players. Notably, Slot’s apparent lack of confidence in Jeremie Frimpong has led to inconsistent team balance, with dominant midfield figure Dominik Szoboszlai filling in at right-back despite being more offensively inclined.

Shearer noted, “Slot doesn’t trust Frimpong yet,” suggesting this affects team cohesion. He observed that Klopp’s team has been “all over the place” in terms of formation and trust, affecting their overall performance. Despite recent setbacks, Shearer believes it’s only a matter of time before Slot gets Liverpool “firing” again, citing the coach’s talent and the team’s potential for improvement.

Frimpong’s limited league appearances include a starting role in the victory over Bournemouth and subsequent substitutes. Liverpool’s recent struggles include late goals conceded to Chelsea and Crystal Palace, which have impacted their confidence and standings. However, Shearer remains optimistic, stating that Liverpool and Salah, in particular, will improve as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, Arsenal faces immense pressure to clinch the Premier League title this year. Having finished second in the last three seasons and invested heavily, they are determined to secure their first league trophy since 2004. Shearer emphasized that Arsenal’s recent developments and squad depth, especially after strengthening their bench, make winning the league a necessity this season.

“It has to be Arsenal’s year,” Shearer declared, highlighting that with the investments and progress made, second place is no longer acceptable. The club’s ability to withstand tough starts and come back strong sets them apart, but the ultimate goal remains winning the title.
