Trump Slams Jack Smith Over FBI Seizing Republicans’ Phone Records
President Trump Criticizes Jack Smith Over FBI Phone Record Surveillance
Following the disclosure that the FBI obtained phone records of eight Republican senators during an investigation led by special counsel Jack Smith, President Trump publicly called Smith “a real sleazebag” and criticized him sharply.
The revelation relates to the Biden administration’s “Arctic Frost” probe, initiated in April 2022 and later overseen by Smith. It involved a “preliminary toll analysis” of several GOP lawmakers in 2023, as detailed in a document released by Senator Chuck Grassley. The document demonstrated that the FBI analyzed basic phone call data to build a profile on the lawmakers without directly intercepting calls.
Several Republican senators expressed outrage, questioning the justification for such surveillance. The group included Senators Lindsey Graham, Bill Hagerty, Josh Hawley, Dan Sullivan, Tommy Tuberville, Ron Johnson, Cynthia Lummis, and Marsha Blackburn, along with Representative Mike Kelly. Grassley stated that this indicates the FBI spied on nine Republican lawmakers during the operation.
Grassley criticized the FBI’s actions, suggesting they may have been worse than the Watergate scandal. He emphasized that accountability is necessary, stating, “If heads don’t roll in this town, nothing changes.” Earlier this year, whistleblowers revealed that the FBI had also accessed phone data for Trump and Vice President Mike Pence during the Arctic Frost investigation. Additionally, it was reported that the FBI was investigating numerous Republican-linked groups, including Turning Point USA.
Other released documents suggest the FBI used its tools to explore efforts to create alternative slates of electors aimed at challenging the 2020 election outcome. Since Trump’s return to the White House, his team has scrutinized Justice Department officials involved in the investigations into the 2020 election and the Capitol riot.
In August, the Office of the Special Counsel announced an investigation into Jack Smith, who asserts that Trump would have likely been convicted had he not been reelected.
