Paul Scholes’s Surprising Pick for Best Premier League Midfielder Over Declan Rice
Paul Scholes Names the Premier League’s Best Midfielder
Paul Scholes, the legendary former Manchester United midfielder, has shared his opinion on who is currently the top midfielder in the Premier League, and his choice might surprise many.
With his extensive experience — scoring 155 goals and providing 82 assists in 716 appearances for United — Scholes is well-qualified to assess top talent. Throughout his career, he helped Manchester United secure 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.
Choosing the league’s finest midfielder is challenging amid numerous talented players. Names such as Moises Caicedo (Chelsea), Declan Rice (Arsenal), and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri are often in the conversation. Others like Bruno Fernandes, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Eberechi Eze also showcase their skills.
However, Scholes believes that Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali is the league’s most impressive midfielder at present. He praised Tonali’s performances, especially after his return from a suspension earlier this year following a betting violation. Since rejoining Newcastle, after a move from AC Milan for £55 million, Tonali has been outstanding, playing a key role in the club’s return to the Champions League.
Last season, Tonali made 45 appearances and scored six goals, notably helping Newcastle in their successful campaign. He also provided a brilliant assist in their recent 4-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise. Scholes lauded his physical prowess, technical skill, and tactical understanding, emphasizing his all-around qualities.
Commenting on his style, Scholes noted that Tonali’s strength lies in his physicality and game intelligence, making him invaluable to his team. His performances have earned him recognition at the international level, with three goals in 27 appearances for Italy. Currently, Italy sits second in their World Cup qualifying group, level on points with France, Gattuso’s team’s manager.
Sandro Tonali has made a significant impact since joining Newcastle from AC Milan.
