Ex-Man City Star Julian Alvarez Reveals How Pep Guardiola’s Bold World Cup Prediction Left Teammates Speechless—And It Was Spot On!
Former Manchester City Player Julian Alvarez Shares Pep Guardiola’s World Cup Prediction That Caught Everyone Off Guard
Julian Alvarez has recounted how coach Pep Guardiola predicted Argentina’s victory in the 2022 World Cup shortly after he joined Manchester City. Argentina secured their third world title in Qatar, defeating France in a tense penalty shootout.
Alvarez, who transferred from River Plate less than six months before the tournament, recalled a training session where Guardiola confidently forecasted Argentina as the winners. “It was during my first days after arriving, and the players were discussing which teams were strong,” he explained. “Pep pointed at me and said, ‘You know who doesn’t say anything will end up champion?’ and that was Argentina.”
The striker, now 25, had been part of City’s squad that achieved an historic treble in the 2022-23 season and later moved to Atletico Madrid last summer for £81 million. He has since scored 29 goals in 54 appearances for Diego Simeone’s team.
Guardiola has openly expressed regret over Alvarez’s departure. He highlighted the team’s need for versatility and depth, noting that although Alvarez’s exit might be seen as a mistake, it was driven by the club’s strategic considerations and the desire to give players regular playing time. He emphasized that having a committed and professional squad is vital, and he believes patience is the best approach during demanding seasons.
