Gary Neville’s Builder Backlash: Workers Fight Back Against Union Jack Removal and Free Speech Suppression

Gary Neville Sparks Controversy Over Flag Removal at Construction Site

Former football star turned property developer Gary Neville has attracted criticism from construction workers at his £400 million redevelopment project in Manchester after instructing them to remove a Union flag from the site.

Neville, 50, publicly explained in a video that he ordered the flag’s removal immediately upon seeing it, citing concerns about its negative use by certain groups. He described his view that “angry, middle-aged white men” are dividing the country by misappropriating the Union Jack.

At the site in Bootle Street, workers who had been flying the Union flag alongside others, including a Moldovan flag, were upset by Neville’s intervention. One anonymous worker told a newspaper that Neville noticed the Union flag from the street, then used the radio to demand its removal, specifically targeting the Union Jack and not other flags.

“Flags are common on construction sites nationwide. We put them up to honor our origins. Neville, who played for England, now forbids us from displaying our patriotism,” he said. After the incident, workers had to hold discussions discouraging political expressions on-site, including flag displays.

Despite Neville’s personal support for Britain, his actions have caused unrest among the workforce, many of whom feel their right to display national symbols is being suppressed. Some workers questioned Neville’s authority to dictate such policies and highlighted that flags are a regular sight across the country.

Neville has expressed frustration over recent social tensions, linking the removal of the Union flag to broader divisions in society. He also voiced concern about protests connected to raising national flags, particularly during campaigns like “Operation Raise the Colours,” and condemned recent violent attacks on Jewish communities in Manchester.

He stated that the use of the Union Jack in a negative context is inappropriate and emphasized his pride for England and Britain. Neville emphasized the need to return to a more neutral perspective amid current divisive times.
