Trump Sends 300 California Guards to Portland, Defying Federal Court

President Trump Deploys 300 Troops to Portland Despite Court Orders

In a controversial move, President Trump sent 300 California National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, directly defying a federal court order that blocked the deployment. Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to sue, condemning the action as “un-American” and calling it a power grab aimed at using military force for political ends.

The court’s decision came after Trump ordered the deployment of 200 Oregon National Guard members to Portland, a city besieged by protests for over 100 days, primarily around anti-immigration demonstrations. The judge ruled that sending active military personnel here would violate the U.S. Constitution and legal statutes prohibiting military involvement in domestic law enforcement. She noted that the protests at the immigration facility were small and peaceful, making the intended deployment unnecessary and unwarranted.

Despite the legal restrictions, the White House defended the president’s action, asserting he used his “lawful authority” to protect federal assets amid ongoing unrest. Supporters argue that federal officials have faced nightly assaults—such as rocks and Molotov cocktails—and claim that local police have provided minimal support. The situation has escalated to threats and physical confrontations, with federal agents clashing with protesters outside ICE facilities, and reports of protesters following staff to their homes, even doxxing employees.

Protests remain intense, with hundreds demonstrating at a key detention center just days before the court’s ruling, resulting in tear gas and other dispersal tactics. In response to the sustained chaos, President Trump also ordered his administration to review federal funding for Portland, aiming to cut resources connected to unresolved civil unrest. The Attorney General has launched an investigation into the Portland Police Bureau amid allegations of insufficient response to violence.
