Ex-Premier League Player’s £270K Lamborghini Destroyed in Major Motorway Crash
Former Premier League Player’s £270,000 Lamborghini Severely Damaged in Major Three-Car Collision
The former professional footballer Eljero Elia was involved in a serious crash on a Dutch motorway, resulting in extensive damage to his luxury vehicle. The incident occurred late Saturday on the A4 motorway near Leiden.
Elia, 38, who had a brief stint at Southampton in 2015, recounted that the crash was triggered when the vehicle ahead suddenly came to a stop, causing his Lamborghini Urus to skid as he tried to brake. He explained to a Dutch newspaper that the car in front failed to activate its hazard lights despite braking abruptly.
“The traffic in front of me suddenly stopped; I couldn’t brake in time,” Elia said. “I was driving on a usually quiet stretch when the cars unexpectedly slowed down. I tried to stop, but I skidded.”
During the collision, Elia managed to steer past the vehicle behind him to avoid a direct impact. However, he hit the vehicle more on the side, causing significant damage. The crash involved three cars and resulted in the closure of the motorway for several hours while police conducted an investigation and cleared debris.
The heavily damaged vehicles were removed by tow trucks. Reports indicated that at least one other driver was detained by police, with Elia also taken in a police van for questioning. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and Elia confirmed he had spoken with authorities about the incident.
“There’s only damage to the cars; nobody was hurt. It could have been worse,” Elia stated, adding, “Everyone was shocked.” He later posted on Instagram, reassuring fans: “Everyone is healthy and well. Got out of the situation safely. God is great.”
Elia retired from professional football in 2022 after playing for clubs across Europe, including Twente, Hamburg, Juventus, Feyenoord, and others. He also earned 30 caps for the Dutch national team and now works as an assistant coach for ADO Den Haag’s Under-21 squad.
