NYPD Shots Armed Man During Brooklyn Foot Chase
Armed Man Shot and Killed by NYPD Officers in Brooklyn
During a brief foot pursuit, NYPD officers fatally shot an armed man early Sunday morning in Brooklyn, authorities reported.
Six officers responded to a call on East 86th Street around 9 a.m. regarding a 28-year-old suspect who had violated a protective order and was seen leaving a building with a firearm, police said.
Assistant Chief Francis Giordano described the encounter, stating, “When officers arrived, they saw a person matching the description given. As they approached, he ran, gun in hand.”
A gun was recovered from the scene, and surveillance footage is being examined, along with body camera recordings, by investigators.
Giordano explained, “That gun was out and in his hand during a very close-range engagement.”
Officials said the suspect ran on foot, holding the weapon, but did not fire any shots. Police repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but he refused. After multiple warnings, officers shot him in the chest.
The suspect was handcuffed and transported immediately to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers indicated they tried to save his life and rushed him to the hospital quickly.
Markers on the ground at the scene indicate the location of the shooting, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Prior reports indicated this individual had been involved in domestic violence incidents, and the woman who called 911 had reported harassment at her door and is pursuing a restraining order against him.
The suspect’s identity has not been publicly released pending further investigation.
