Tragic Stadium Disaster in Algeria: Three Dead, Over 70 Injured

During celebrations marking MC Alger’s second consecutive league title, a catastrophic incident at the Beni Messous stadium resulted in the deaths of three spectators and injuries to more than 70 others. The tragedy occurred when a section of the barrier in the upper stand collapsed, causing fans to fall into the lower tier.

Local authorities confirmed that the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with the Beni Messous University Hospital admitting 38 patients, Ben Aknoun Hospital 27, and Bab El Oued Hospital 16. Emergency services responded promptly, and players and staff from MC Alger visited hospitals to donate blood. The victory celebration was immediately halted, and the trophy presentation was postponed.

Footage from the incident revealed a section of railing caved in, contributing to the chaos. The club announced on social media the sad passing of supporter Younes Amguzzi due to the fall. The other two fatalities have yet to be publicly identified by the club.

The Algerian government and stadium officials have yet to issue a formal statement on safety protocols. This devastating event has raised urgent questions about crowd management and stadium safety standards in the country.
