Woman Charged with Assaulting Delta Employee at Salt Lake City Airport
Passenger Arrested After Disruptive Airport Outburst
A passenger was detained following a violent incident at Salt Lake City International Airport. The individual, identified as Cody Sierra Marie Byrne, 31, allegedly became intoxicated and caused chaos on a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Portland, Oregon.
According to authorities, Byrne refused several commands to move from the airplane aisle as passengers waited to be seated. During the confrontation, she reportedly grabbed and twisted a Delta employee’s breast while shouting threats. When she finally relocated, she forcefully shoulder-checked a staff member, pushing her backward into a seat.
The flight crew quickly responded by ordering Byrne off the plane. As she was escorted away, she attempted to dash into a secure area of the terminal. Airline staff prevented her from escaping and, in the process, she allegedly grabbed and yanked a woman’s hair and neck, then again twisted a staff member’s breast while threatening her.
Police noted Byrne resisted arrest, requiring two officers to restrain her. During questioning, she denied any physical contact or assault, but acknowledged she had been drinking earlier that day and appeared heavily intoxicated. Witnesses said she exhibited signs of severe drunkenness, including poor coordination, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol.
Byrne is currently held at Salt Lake County Metro Jail. Authorities have emphasized an increase in unruly passenger incidents since the COVID-19 pandemic, with fines for interfering with crew members reaching up to $37,000.
Her first court appearance is scheduled early next week. Delta Airlines affirmed its strict stance against disruptive behavior, stating their commitment to the safety of passengers and staff and cooperation with law enforcement during the investigation.
