Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem Blocks Entry to Illinois Government Building During Visit

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem publicly criticized Illinois authorities after she and her team were prevented from entering a village government building during a visit to a nearby ICE facility embroiled in ongoing protests.

Noem shared a video showing her team being denied access to the Broadview Municipal Building, located about 12 miles west of downtown Chicago, after requesting to use the restroom. She condemned the local officials, accusing Governor JB Pritzker of enabling a stance of non-cooperation towards federal agents.

In her social media post, Noem explained, “We were only stopping for a quick bathroom break,” and she criticized Illinois leadership for their treatment of law enforcement. She stated, “This is a public building. The Village of Broadview receives over $1 million in federal funding annually, yet this is how they treat federal personnel.”

The video taken by conservative commentator Benny Johnson shows Noem and her aides approaching the building. Inside, a man blocks the door and shouts, “No, you cannot,” when they ask to use the bathroom. Noem praised her team’s politeness and criticized local officials for their lack of cooperation, asserting that the situation exemplifies the challenges federal agents face in executing law enforcement efforts.

Noem later criticized Illinois officials, suggesting that they are not genuine in their claims of supporting law enforcement. She also pointed out that the bathrooms at the ICE facility she visited had been reported as unavailable and criticized Mayor Katrina Thompson for visiting the center with police officers but claiming to be unable to meet with federal officials. Noem was observed earlier on the rooftop of the site, which has been a hotspot for anti-ICE protests.

Broadview officials responded, claiming the video was incomplete. Village spokesperson David Ormsby stated that Noem’s visit was unannounced and that the mayor, who was away at the time, had attempted to meet with ICE officials but was told the secretary was unavailable. The mayor also visited the ICE center with police, but no official meeting occurred. Pritzker and local officials have not responded to further requests for comment.
