Trump Helps Ukraine to Bring Putin’s Day of Reckoning
Russia’s Military Mobilization and Declining Support for the War
Russian President Vladimir Putin has responded to escalating tensions by ordering a large-scale conscription drive, calling 135,000 men into service in what is the country’s biggest fall draft in nine years. This move appears to be a show of strength, signaling to Kyiv and the international community that Russia is committed to a prolonged conflict.
Meanwhile, Western nations continue to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. Recent reports indicate that the U.S. is providing intelligence support to Ukraine for targeting key Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries and pipelines. There is also consideration of supplying Kyiv with advanced cruise missiles such as Tomahawk and Barracuda, capable of striking deep inside Russian territory.
Additionally, Ukrainian officials are in Washington negotiating a deal for the U.S. to purchase drones directly from Kyiv. These efforts aim to enhance Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian military targets and potentially hasten the resolution of the conflict.
The increased military activity by Russia is driven by a desire to project strength and deter Western support for Ukraine. However, growing domestic opposition within Russia signals a shift. Polling suggests that support for the invasion has significantly declined, with two-thirds of Russians now favoring peace over continuing the conflict. Only 27% of the populace wants the war to proceed, marking a historic low.
Despite attempts by Putin to dismiss dissent, public opinion appears to be turning. Russia’s war has already claimed more lives than its decade-long intervention in Afghanistan, and sustained casualties could eventually undermine Putin’s grip on the public. Historically, even authoritarian regimes cannot ignore the will of their people indefinitely.
In the broader context, increasing diplomatic and military support for Ukraine combined with Russia’s internal pressures may accelerate the path toward ending the conflict and diminishing Putin’s influence on the global stage.
