Lost Dog Finds Way Home 2,000 Miles After Storm Escape

Lost California Dog Spotted 2,000 Miles Away and Safely Reunited with Owner

A five-year-old dog who disappeared from his California home in July was found over two months later in Illinois, thanks to his microchip. Opie, a corgi-shepherd mix, ran off during a storm, leaving his owner worried and searching fruitlessly.

On September 28, Opie was spotted wandering near Chicago, far from his home. He was taken into custody by the Itasca Police Department, where a scanner revealed his microchip information. Surprisingly, his collar had a different name, making the case more mysterious. The police contacted his owner, who initially doubted the news and struggled to believe her dog had traveled so far.

Eventually, he was identified, and his owner promptly arranged to retrieve him. On October 1, she traveled to DuPage County Animal Services and brought Opie home. As she headed back to California, she expressed relief and joy, sharing that she was on her way back with her adventurous pup.

Authorities think Opie was likely stolen during his escape, then somehow dragged across the country. Flimon, a local animal services administrator, urged pet owners to keep microchip contact details current to ensure proper reunions, especially if pets are stolen.
