Fans Slam Football Manager for Replacing Socceroos Star: ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Doing’

Watford Manager Faces Criticism from Fans Over Substitution of Socceroos Young Star

Watford’s head coach, Paulo Pezzolano, stood by his decision to substitute Nestory Irankunda during a recent match against Portsmouth, despite a heated reaction from the supporters. The 19-year-old winger, who was representing the Socceroos, appeared visibly upset after being taken off after just 35 minutes at Fratton Park.

Irankunda expressed his frustration by punching the bench seat, tossing a water bottle, and leaving the field quickly. Around 1,200 Watford fans responded by chanting derogatory comments at the manager, including “you don’t know what you’re doing” and “you’re getting sacked in the morning.”

Following the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw, Pezzolano explained his decision. “He (Irankunda) was not feeling as fresh and couldn’t recover after an effort. We didn’t want to risk injury or further issues,” the coach stated.

Despite the fans’ displeasure, Pezzolano maintained that the role of young players includes learning how to handle such moments and emphasized his focus on the club’s best interests and progress.

In positive news, Irankunda has received a call-up to the Socceroos squad for upcoming matches against Canada and the US. The Australian team aims to build momentum ahead of the World Cup, with matches against Canada in Montreal on October 11 and the US in Colorado four days later. Both games will be broadcast on Paramount+.

Coach Tony Popovic highlighted the importance of these fixtures in preparing the team for future international challenges: “Facing two World Cup hosts provides valuable experience.”
