Tottenham Star Declines International Call Amid Injury Recovery, Says Frank Urges Patience
Tottenham Blocks Radu Dragusin’s International Call-Up Amidst Recovery Caution
Tottenham Hotspur has declined Romania’s efforts to include defender Radu Dragusin in their upcoming international fixtures, prioritizing his ongoing recovery from a serious knee injury.
Dragusin, 23, has been sidelined since January due to a cruciate ligament injury. Although he is nearing full fitness, Spurs manager Thomas Frank emphasized the importance of cautious rehabilitation, avoiding rushed reintegration into competitive play.
Romania’s national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, had previously listed Dragusin among overseas-based players for two October matches—an international friendly against Moldova and a crucial Group H qualifier against Austria. A loss to Austria could extinguish Romania’s chances of qualifying for next year’s World Cup, especially if Bosnia-Herzegovina secures victory over Cyprus. Lucescu saw Dragusin’s presence as a morale booster and potential on-field contributor, possibly even making a brief appearance from the bench.
In January 2024, Dragusin transferred from Genoa to Tottenham in a deal worth up to £26 million, making him Romania’s most expensive player to date. Despite his willingness to join the national team, Spurs’ medical staff advised that he remains focused on his gradual recovery, training consistently but not yet engaging in full-contact sessions with the squad.
Romania has accepted Tottenham’s stance, choosing not to exert pressure or invoke FIFA regulations that could compel Dragusin’s participation. The Romanian coach acknowledged that Dragusin was eager to return but needs approximately another month of careful training before resuming full competitive activity.
Dragusin has not been included in Tottenham’s Champions League squad, and his recovery continues under close supervision to ensure a safe return to match fitness.
Tottenham has decided against releasing Dragusin for international duty as he focuses on his recovery.
He has been out since January, and the club emphasizes gradual rehabilitation, avoiding rushing him back into full contact.
