Trae Young’s Contract Extension: Close but Not Quite Yet, as Hawks Training Camp Begins

Trae Young Addresses Contract Status and Team Focus

While Trae Young hasn’t yet reached a point of disappointment regarding his contract extension, he’s nearing that sentiment. Speaking at the team’s media day, Young acknowledged that his potential four-year, $229 million extension with the Atlanta Hawks remains unresolved. Though he tried to downplay its importance, it’s clearly on his mind.

“I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed, but maybe close to it,” he said. “My main focus is on the team we’re building for this season. I feel blessed. If something happens with my contract, great. If not, I still have time to handle it.”

Last season, Young averaged 24.2 points and led the league with 11.6 assists per game, earning his fourth All-Star nod. Despite his individual success, the Hawks finished with a 40-42 record and missed the playoffs for a second consecutive year under head coach Quin Snyder.

Entering his eighth NBA season, Young is on a five-year, $215 million deal signed before the 2022-23 campaign, with two years remaining and a player option for next season before entering free agency in 2027. The progress of a new contract remains uncertain.

However, Young is committed to guiding the team back to the postseason. The Hawks made key offseason moves, acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the Celtics, Nickeil Alexander-Walker from the Timberwolves, and signing Luke Kennard to an $11 million, one-year deal.

“Right now, my focus is on this team,” Young stated. “We have a great group going into this season. I’ve never had a team like this before, and I’m excited. Who knows what the future holds, but for now, I’m here and fully present, just like Coach Snyder and I have been discussing. I’m ready to play.”
