Kevin Durant Celebrates 37th Birthday and Sets Sights on Future with Houston Rockets

Kevin Durant marked his 37th birthday by beginning his first season with the Houston Rockets, signaling his optimism about a long-term future with the team.

Acquired in a historic seven-team trade in June, Durant aims to lead the Rockets beyond their recent achievements. While he is set to earn approximately $54.7 million in the 2025-26 season — his 18th in the NBA — he believes extending his contract is a strong possibility.

“I see myself signing an extension,” Durant told reporters at the season’s start, indicating he’s open to staying with Houston through the 2027-28 season, which would see him earn over $120 million if the maximum salary cap percentage applies. He and the team have time to negotiate throughout the season.

The Rockets hope to build on last year’s surprising performance, which saw them achieve over 50 wins and make the playoffs despite setbacks like starting point guard Fred VanVleet tearing his ACL, likely for the season. Durant’s goal is to be a catalyst to elevate the team to NBA Finals contention — a stage Houston hasn’t reached since 1995, and one Durant hasn’t experienced since 2019.

Last season, Durant averaged 26.6 points, coupled with high efficiency, shooting over 52% from the field and 43% from three-point range, demonstrating his continued elite scoring ability. He is among only five NBA players to average over 25 points per game with a true shooting percentage above 60% last year — a record he has achieved 14 times in his career, more than any other player in league history.

Returning to Texas, where he played college basketball at the University of Texas, Durant feels a personal connection to Houston and its organization. His relationship with head coach Ime Udoka, developed during Durant’s time with Brooklyn, further cements his comfort and confidence in the team’s future.

If Durant’s skills and leadership translate into a successful season, and the Rockets continue their upward trajectory, a contract extension — and potentially a lengthy, impactful tenure — seems increasingly likely.
