Trump Criticizes DOJ Probe of Ex-FBI Director Wray

President Trump Questions Justice Department’s Investigation of FBI Director Christopher Wray

President Trump indicated he believes the Justice Department may be examining former FBI Director Christopher Wray. Over the weekend, Trump criticized Wray over reports alleging the FBI had deployed plainclothes agents at the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot—though Wray later clarified that some agents arrived after the violence had already started.

When asked if the DOJ is investigating Wray, Trump told NBC News, “I would imagine. I would certainly imagine. I believe they are doing that.” He expressed disapproval of Wray’s actions, calling them “inappropriate,” but noted that details about FBI agents being present are still emerging.

Trump has been a vocal critic of FBI leadership during his tenure.

Saturday saw the emergence of a report claiming the FBI confirmed the presence of 274 plainclothes agents at the riot. Trump seized on this, suggesting that FBI leaders, including Wray, owe congressional explanations. He also alleged—without evidence—that some agents may have acted as agitators rather than law enforcement.

Chris Wray has kept a low profile since resigning earlier this year, just before Trump officially became the 47th president. The President has previously criticized Wray’s appointment, alleging he was recommended by political figures.

Christopher Wray has maintained a cautious stance in public since leaving the FBI.

Despite claims of numerous agents in the crowd, an official Justice Department watchdog report stated there was no evidence of undercover FBI employees at the Capitol on January 6. The report did acknowledge the presence of informants, but not undercovers in the rioting crowds.

Wray’s tenure began in 2017, succeeding James Comey. Trump has criticized Wray’s leadership, and recent indictments of former FBI officials suggest ongoing scrutiny of the bureau’s actions surrounding past investigations.
