Southport Shooting Suspect Nigel Edge: Decorated Marine & Purple Heart Recipient

Former Marine Suspected in Mass Shooting at Southport Restaurant

Nigel Edge, a highly decorated former Marine and Purple Heart recipient, has been detained after allegedly opening fire at a crowded restaurant in Southport, North Carolina. The shooting resulted in three deaths and eight injuries, with one victim still in critical condition.

Edge, who changed his name from Sean DeBevoise in 2023, served in the Marine Corps from 2003 to 2009, earning numerous awards including the Purple Heart, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and Iraq Campaign Medals. He participated in two tours in Iraq and last served at the Wounded Warrior Battalion East in Camp Lejeune, a rehabilitation center for injured service members.

Authorities reported that Edge, aged 39, was armed with a short-barreled AR rifle with a suppressor, scope, and folding stock during the incident. He faces multiple charges: three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The motivation behind the attack remains unclear, but investigators deem it to be highly premeditated.

Post-military, Edge appeared to develop paranoid conspiracy theories, filing several bizarre lawsuits this year. One claim accused a local church of conspiring with LGBTQ groups and white supremacists to kill him, asserting he was targeted because of his sexuality. Other lawsuits involved accusations against medical centers and claimed he was a victim of international plots, though these cases were dismissed.

Edge has spoken publicly about his wartime injuries, including wounds from IED explosions and friendly fire incidents. He authored a book titled Headshot: Betrayal of a Nation, where he alleges he was shot multiple times and entangled in a conspiracy ring during his service in Iraq.

He was seen in 2012 on the red carpet accompanying a well-known country singer, symbolizing a different phase of his life. Currently, he is held without bond at Brunswick County Detention Center and is scheduled for an initial court appearance.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive of the attack, emphasizing its premeditated nature. The community remains shaken by the violent event.
